Prevent People from Prying or Kicking into Your Door

Here’s the first installment of my blog. I’ll be adding more content periodically that pertains to locks and locksmithing, so check back from time to time. The first topic I want to cover is how you can help prevent people from prying or kicking into your door. The first thing you need to know is that a deadbolt is much more secure than a latch. A typical deadbolt extends beyond the edge of the door a minimum 1″. On the other hand, a latch will typically only extend beyond the door 1/2″. That extra 1/2″ of metal will make a big difference when an intruder is trying to kick or pry your door open. The strike plates is another key component to strengthen the lock system. The strike plate is part of the deadbolt mounted on the frame of the door. When the door is locked the bolt extends from the door into the frame through the strike plate. This plate should be heavy duty and mounted with screws no less than 3″ long. The final element I recommend using is a latch guard. A latch guard is a special plate mounted over the front of a latch or a deadbolt. This will Prevent People from inserting pry tools into the crack of the door or door frame. Latch guards are more common in commercial settings although I do see them occasionally in residential setting.
